Gum Disease, the Silent Disease
Gum disease affects 87% of all people in the U.S. according to the American Academy of Periodontology of their gums. It is an infection of the gums and bone surrounding your teeth destroying the bone that supports your teeth. It is the major cause of tooth loss in adults. www.perio.org/consumer/patient-resources
For some patients it is painless and undetected until they come in for their professional cleaning and a comprehensive exam by Dr. Lee or Dr. Kim. www.delitedental.net We diagnose periodontal disease by measuring the gums. The measurements help us diagnosis areas of concern and severity of of disease.
In a healthy mouth the space between the tooth and bone (called a pocket) is usually 1-3mm. When you have gingivitis and periodontal disease these pockets get deeper and range from 4mm-10mm or more. In this case the teeth become loose and will eventually, fall out.
Gum disease is also linked to heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Research has now shown that having periodontal disease puts you at risk for other conditions including Rheumatoid Arthritis, certain cancers and even kidney disease.
